The Literalist

I Reading between the lines

I was trying to find
the hidden message,
but all I could see was white
gaps of paper between ink
and an array of editorial marks.

II You put words in my mouth

You crammed the vowels
underneath my tongue,
let me choke on your name.

The ts caught in my teeth
and I shuddered until I could feel
them swirl in my stomach.

III The time my heart broke

In the midst of a crowd
you brought me to my knees
and lay with me in a crop circle
until we were both still.
