Week 1 Screening - Brazil (1985)

Film Society returns for semester 2! For our first screening, we're watching the cult classic satire Brazil.

In this absurdist dystopic sci-fi piece, low-level government worker Sam Lowry has recurring dreams where he takes the role of a winged saviour for a damsel in distress. While investigating the death of a man arrested and interrogated due to a typographical error, Sam sees the woman of his dreams and, in pursuing her, is caught in the cogs of the beaurocratic machine.
Directed and co-written by Terry Gilliamm of Monty Python, Brazil has been regarded as a classic piece of satire, placed beside other greats such as Dr. Strangelove. While it recieved two academy award nominations on release, Brazil has since received greater recognition in following years, often cited as one of the greatest cult classic films of all time.
