We’re excited for an evening of conversations with leading urban designers whose careers have taken unexpected and interdisciplinary paths across ecology, placemaking, sustainability, consultancy, government and academia. Hosted in Collaboration with the Urban Design Forum Australia, this panel will explore career development, pathways into urban design, and the many directions a career in the industry can take. From study and early career decisions to leadership and specialisation, our speakers will share insights and experiences from across the sector.

Our experienced speakers:
Carlos Reyes

Senior Associate Urban Designer at MGS whose career has crossed industrial design, architecture, urban planning and city design. He began designing furniture and bicycles before moving into architecture, heritage restoration and community-led regeneration projects. Since then, he has worked on major urban renewal initiatives in Bogotá, international development projects in Latin America, built form research and urban design review, strategy and policy in Australia. Today, he leads urban design projects ranging from precinct strategies and masterplans to housing and place-based policy, with a passion for connecting design excellence with meaningful social outcomes.

Cristina Hernández Santín

RMIT educator and sole practitioner. Her path into urban design didn't start there... It started in ecology and stumbled upon landscape architecture and regenerative design. Feeling like she needed stronger design skills, she completed a Masters of Environment specialising in sustainable cities and landscapes and later on worked in developing a practice-based placemaking education program in the University of Melbourne. She was one of the authors who first coined the term  'Regenerative Placemaking'  and spent several years bringing together education and practice on city-making through a human-based lens. Getting back to her roots in ecology, she's now completed a PhD on Biodiversity Inclusive Design: a participatory design approach to integrate non-human voices within city-making processes. This project bridges all her passions, pulling ecology, placemaking and urban design together. She now teaches urban design at RMIT, and is building a small consultancy to take that work further.

Mitra Anderson-Oliver

Senior Manager, Urban Waterways at DEECA. Mitra Anderson-Oliver is a public sector leader working at the intersection of urban design, waterway policy and city-shaping reform. As Senior Manager, Urban Waterways at DEECA, Mitra leads work to protect and enhance Victoria’s urban rivers as living entities, and vital public spaces.  
Mitra’s career spans infrastructure, strategic planning, urban design and housing policy, reflecting a diverse pathway into city-making. She has led major reforms including new regulation for affordable housing, Victoria’s first apartment standards, and landmark legislation to protect urban waterways, as well as contributing to the renewal of Melbourne’s creative and urban precincts.
