– what? — some flowers soon? * A language making workshop with Rowan McNaught

21/04/2026–21/04/2026
1:00 PM–3:00 PM
UMSU Gallery

Brought to you by the SSAF

This is a workshop for those interested in the idea of making and using their own language as a form of visual poetry. We will discuss all the risks, possibilities, and difficulties such a categorical slip entails, and look at some prior art, including the amateur symbol language Bliss (1949–) and the musical language Solresol (1817–). Then we will each try to imagine the beginnings of our own language and make a work on paper that documents it.

This will appeal most to artists, poets, and those with an interest in language, but no prior experience is necessary. Please bring a laptop if you can. We will provide paper and drawing tools; if you prefer some other media, you’re very welcome to bring them.

WHEN: Tuesday 21 April, 1-3PM
WHERE: Arts Lab, Level 1, Arts and Cultural Building, Monash Road, Building 159 (MAP), next to the George Paton Gallery.

Rowan McNaught is the secretary of Darpa, under whose auspices he holds this workshop.
