How do art writers use time constraints in their work to create tension, pleasure, and immersion for their readers? How does the amount of time spent on researching, reporting, and writing a piece impact its final form? And how, in this economy, can one find time to write?
Join Cameron Hurst for a workshop that will attempt to provide some answers to these questions. We will analyse a series of recent and historic essays and discuss how they might relate to participants' own writing interests. The case studies take place over time spans ranging from a few hours to one week to four years, and are written about being on tour with the musician Charli xcx, at the desk of the novelist and performance artist Fiona Kelly McGregor, and in the studios of the painters David Salle and Julian Schnabel. All are welcome—no writing experience or time management skills required.

Cameron Hurst is a writer, editor, and art historian. She is an editor of The Paris End newsletter and is currently doing a PhD on Northern European Renaissance art at the University of Melbourne. She has contributed to scholarly and general readership arts publications including Memo, Index, Artlink, ANZJA, Griffith Review, and HEAT, and published the books EXCLUSIVE! Dispatches from The Paris End (with Sally Olds and Oscar Schwartz, Giramondo, 2025), and Venus in Tullamarine: Art, Sex, Politics, and Norman Lindsay (with Jeremy George, Index Books, 2023).
