Making friends at uni

Making friends at uni can be so daunting! You can’t just start playing on the playground together or get excited because you have the same lunchbox like when we were kids. But don’t let that stop you, trust that everyone is feeling it! Living in accommodation myself, I went to a lot of events my accommodation put on in the first few weeks of Uni. That’s the perfect chance to meet people right there in your building (think about the potential for movie nights!).

That’s the perfect chance to meet people right there in your building (think about the potential for movie nights!) I even met one of my best friends in the elevator, just because I overheard her saying she was studying the same degree.

Joining clubs is also one of the best ways to find people who share your niche interests! It’s also a great chance to meet people outside of your degree or from a different year level.

Outside of clubs, we also have UMSU collectives that usually involve free food, activities, and people who just want to meet people. Finding Bla(c)k Collective has been one of the best things to happen to me and I’ve made life-long friends.

But if I had to give just ONE piece of advice. Talk to that person sitting next to you in class. They’re on the same journey, same classes, same deadlines. Who knows, they may even end up sitting next to you at graduation. It’s always nice to have people that are going through the same experiences or the same struggle subjects (#mcb) as you!

Maybe you can even match your timetables next semester!

UMSU also hosts 200+ student clubs, a bunch of collectives, and a volunteering program that can all help you make friends!
