Opening Celebration Thursday 24 July, 5-7pm

This is an exhibition about the implications of water, the body and the artist as they shift across waves of intimacy and rejection.  Within a room of paintings surrounded by the presence of colour this exhibition presents a deviant energy that resists being captured. It opens an environment for experiencing paintings that are ‘unmastered’ and instead slippery and murky and incomplete and finding. Important to this exhibition is embodying a queer way of being in the world. Asking for us to be queer as not a frame of identification, but as what Sara Ahmed describes as a political form of the body witnessing difference. ‘Murky Waters Crystal Horizon’ shares an experience of painting as a series of waves that open into colour, into shape, into wetness from a place of discomfort, resistance, desire and recognition. Each painting offering a different environment that we all are invited to be a part of.

Caoife Power (b. 1993, Eire Ireland/ 1997, Eora Sydney, Australia) lives and works in Narrm, Melbourne. Caoife is a process driven artist based within painting and poetry. Caoife is interested in the language of painting from a queer(ing) position and how it can speak to: affect theory, queer/crip embodiment, colour and wildness. Her embodied position drives her way of understanding ‘unruly’ subjectivity, unpacking how the impact of contemporary society can sit within the body and shift the way it moves through the world. Using abstraction, Caoife is not interested in resolution, but finding a language of desire and freedom that sits within a place of inexactness.
