Farrago’s 2025 AFL Recap

featuredHomeFodder

The AFL 2025 season is drawing to a close, and Snoop Dog is interestingly this year’s pick to perform at the Grand Final. Making the safe assumption that he hasn’t been keeping up, we’ve compiled some of the season’s top moments to catch him up!

TOP MOMENTS

Tom Lynch needs to keep his right hand in check …

Tom Lynch struck a punch against Adelaide Crows defender Jordon Butts during their round 16 game. Taking their roles as defenders seriously, Crows’ Mark Keane and Josh Worrell joined in to protect Butts’ honour with Isaac Cumming, suffering from immense FOMO, later contributing with an uncommitted shove. The girls are fighting!

Willie Rioli is on his period (allegedly)

Lately, Willie Rioli seems quite moody. The Port Adelaide player almost escaped sanctions after he threatened Bulldogs player Bailey Dale, in a text to another Bulldogs player, that he had friends in Darwin and Dale should be careful about leaving the team hotel while in the city. Yikes. After further investigation by the AFL, it was discovered he engaged in cat fights with Geelong and regular fights with Essendon players during the 2024 season. He later apologised.

Security at Princess Park, please

Living not so far away from Carlton’s Ikon Park, I felt quite violated when I found out it was vandalised on a dark winter night. ‘Sack the board,’ ‘Sack Austin, Lloyd,’ the depressed Carlton fan graffitied on the walls as tears fell to the ground. ‘Keep Voss,’ they controversially continued, ‘TDK yes or no.’ This incident came after a brutal loss against Port Adelaide – 16.14 (110) to 8.12 (60). A true symbol of Carlton’s downfall this season, I am sure it can’t get any worse!

V/AFL history is made

St Kilda, at their round 20 game against Melbourne, were down 46 points at the final break. But, after a remarkable final quarter the Saints won with only a six-points lead  spearheaded by Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera’s two goals in the game’s final minute. This was V/AFL’s greatest comeback in history. Milera’s performance this year made him highly desired scoring a record breaking $30 million deal which he turned down.

Alex Pearce versus Angry Legacy Media

This one got the media really angry … Dockers captain Alex Pearce came out as a Kneecap fan after sharing a social media post by the band. But the criticisms launched against Pearce by the media was not about his music taste, instead because of his support for Kneecap’s not-so-controversial, controversial take: war crimes are bad (shock).

STRONG PERFORMERS

Adelaide Crows

The Crows rebrand brought more than just a new polished logo which replaced its tacky, straight-out-of-the-2010s predecessor. With an improvement in their defensive capabilities while maintaining a powerful forward line, they have been able to smoothly compete against others in the top eight and weaker teams alike. Finishing the 2024 season 15th on the ladder, the Crows have moved all the way up to the top in 2025 – they are now one of four interstate teams comfortably in the top 8. Does this year mark the end of Victorian supremacy in the AFL?

Geelong Cats

The Cats have had a solid season despite a rough start after humiliating losses against the Saints and Carlton. However, they were able to easily redeem their reputation as a constant team. Jeremy Cameron kicked 11 goals in their round 20 game against North Melbourne and Jack Martin a record-breaking four-goal burst during their round 21 game against Port Adelaide. Currently at 79 goals as of writing this, speculation on Cameron’s ability to hit 100 in one season has been rising. But will he be able to hit 21 goals in two games? Probs not. But he is set to maintain his top position as most goals kicked this season. However, their last few rounds being against only weaker teams may not be the best practise heading towards the finals.

Collingwood

We hate to put Collingwood this high, but we give credit where credit is due. They led an insane start to the season with consistent consecutive wins, placing them safely at the top of the ladder for a majority of the season. This streak was lost after Daniel Gorringe’s curse finally caught up to the leading team who lost 5/6 games between rounds 19-23, dropping them down to fourth place. Womp womp…

WEAK PERFORMERS

Sydney Swans

It has been a disappointing season for the Swans. After reaching the Grand Finals last year and undergoing a tragic loss after delivering an uneventful finale, morale is low amongst the team’s players. The Swans have severely underperformed. However, their vengeful two-point win against the Brisbane Lions in round 22 might be able to momentarily lift their spirits near the end of the season. Although, rumour has it that tension between the two teams led to a steamy altercation between the Lions’ Henry Smith and the Swans’ Nick Blakey.

West Coast Eagles

The Eagles have had a rough start, middle and end this season, only winning a whopping singular game. If you know an Eagles supporter (if they still exist) give them a big hug and pay for their therapy, because they need it. But not all hope was lost during their round 22 game against the Crows, finishing ahead in quarters two and three to only lose by nine points. Hopefully this can give Eagles fans something to hold on to during this dry season.

HONOURABLE MENTION

Western Bulldogs

The Doggies deserve recognition for their performance this year. While their weak defence has made them struggle against the top eight teams (pls don’t come for me Beveridge), their ability to bully the rest and approach a hundred points is a testament to their abilities in fighting back and entertaining viewers.

With many solid teams landing in the top eight, this years’ finals are going to be an interesting one. Will the Pies continue to flop? Will the Crows hang on to their place in the top and win the premiership? Can the Eagles score one more win? Will Blakey and Smith be able to set their differences aside to find true love? This season flew by, packed with drama and history making games, it’s sad to see its end. But all is not lost with the AFLW season starting on 14 August!
