Farrago reporters have uncovered that a student has been caught completing assignments and studying for tests in the Rowden White Library.
Callum, a Bachelor of Biomedical Science Student, stated that the “relaxed atmosphere” of the library has made it significantly easier for him to study.
“I don’t like studying in the other libraries because they’re too quiet and it makes me feel like I’m studying at a graveyard, you get me?”
“I tried studying in the Student Pavillion as well, but it just isn’t the same. This library reminds me of trying to get my homework done during class in high school.”
However, this seemingly innocuous action goes against the library’s tagline and rigid code of conduct: “PLEASE DO NOT STUDY”. The University of Melbourne's famous recreational library, the “Rowdy”, has long been a safe haven for students wanting to doomscroll with no guilt, play giant jenga, and sleep between classes. The presence of Callum at the Rowdy has raised eyebrows about what it means to be the one “fun” library at a university campus.
Our reporters questioned one whistleblower and frequenter of the Rowdy, Aaron (19, Bachelor of Arts, Single, Aquarius), who has asked to remain anonymous and has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with Callum’s presence.
“Ever since he's been here, I haven’t been able to relax or read. It’s like his studious energy has made me unable to focus on my recreation.”
“How am I supposed to read when he sits there, with his headphones on, studying? It's a NO STUDYING ZONE. It's against the rules. The idea of him studying interrupts my zen brain waves.”
Another student told us they “really don’t see the problem with him here, but I also don’t see why he can’t study at the real library if he has headphones in anyway.”
Callum has been taken in by UMSU authorities and is pending a sentence of either being forcibly taken to the Maths building or fed to the Rowdy cat as sacrifice.
